Our Story

Our church was planted in June 2017 as a new church plant of Gracepoint Ministries with the vision of planting an Acts 2 church in every college town!

For many of us, college was a momentous and decisive time: Christ’s all-consuming call to discipleship grabbed a hold of our hearts and our lives, and we experienced the richness of a biblical, counter-cultural Christian community. It’s an experience we want to replicate for others – an Acts 2 church in every college town. And so, we focus on college ministry, plant churches in college towns, and encourage every one of our members to live in loving sacrificial service and ministry.

William & Esther Kang

East Coast Regional Pastor

William hit rock bottom at a high point in his life: all was good, but all was meaningless. That is how William found life; And that's how Jesus found him.  Since then, when he was just a junior in college, William has been gripped by the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ and God's amazing grace.  God transformed this frat boy into a pastor and into one of the leaders at our church. William graduated from UC Berkeley (Go Bears!) in 1991 with a degree in Economics. He worked as a consultant, a programmer and a business analyst in SF before entering full time ministry.  He received his M.Div. from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC.

Esther grew up as a pastor's kid in a large Korean congregation in southern California.  Surrounded by pastors all of her life (grandfather, brother and uncles are all pastors), she wasn't all too surprised when William decided to enter full time ministry in 2002.  She studied Geography at UC Berkeley and worked as a transportation planner and SAS programmer after graduating from college.  She has worked alongside William as a minister and director over many of our ministries ever since they were married.

William and Esther serve as regional pastors over Gracepoint East Coast Churches.  If they're not in Fairfax, VA, then they're at one of our churches leading leaders, team members and students.  And if they're not there, then they're somewhere along I-95, I-70, or the beltway, trying to stay awake, avoiding potholes, paying a toll, missing the freeways of California and looking forward to being with their two grown children.

Timothy & Alice Rhee

Team Leads (Fairfax, Va)

Timothy Rhee attended U.C. Berkeley (’92) and U.C. Davis (’94), and studied mechanical engineering.  His first job was at local oil refinery working as a mechanical engineer.  After working several years in the industry, Timothy went back to school this time to study for ministry. He graduated from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary with an M.Div.  Once boiling oil for a living, he is thrilled that he can now be engaged full time ministering to college students.  Timothy is a professing coffee addict, and loves talking about God and life with college students over a cup of coffee.

Alice Rhee attended U.C. Berkeley (’93) and studied sociology. She grew up dreaming of being a high powered attorney in L.A.  But now she has exchanged that childhood dream for serving God, sharing the gospel at various college campuses that she has served at.  Alice worked as college counselor at U.C. Davis, prior to being engaged in full time ministry with Timothy.

They have served together ministering to college students at  U.C. Berkeley, U.C. Davis, University of Minnesota, University of Maryland at College Park. Currently they oversee the ministry at George Mason University in Fairfax and Interhigh ministry.

Team Leads (College Park, MD)

Originally from San Diego, California, Ming became a Christian when he was in college studying philosophy at UC Berkeley.  After graduating from UC Berkeley, he became involved in college ministry while attending UC Davis King Hall School of Law and working as a health care attorney.

Linda grew up in the church, but made a personal decision to follow Christ as a junior in college. She obtained her BS in Biochemistry and MBA degrees from UC Davis, and since then has been involved in college and graduate student ministry. She grew up as a hiphop head and has channeled that into a passion for worship music.

Together with their daughter Joyce, Ming and Linda moved from California to Virginia in 2017 to help plant our church in Fairfax, where their family was blessed with the addition of little Jeremiah. Now they lead our ministry at the University of Maryland!
